Okay, but it is true that Superman (1978) and Batman (1989) were much less self-conscious of their origins; it’s only when Marvel gets into the game (and really, when the first X-Men movie comes out) that they start holding their audience’s hand and assuring them that they’re still manly-man adults and not overgrown teenagers for enjoying something from (*cringe*) comic books
